Why a desert driving course?
The Omani desert captivates with its endless expanse and majestic dunes. However, driving in deep sand requires completely different techniques to those used on tarmac. Incorrect tyre pressure, choosing the wrong gear or underestimating the edge of a dune can quickly lead to getting stuck – or worse.
Our Mission
We will show and teach you how to tackle the desert safely, in a controlled manner and with maximum driving enjoyment. North of Salalah, where the real adventures begin, you’ll learn from experienced instructors how to get a feel for the vehicle, the sand and the terrain.
Tyre Pressure & Physics:
Why less air means more grip. You’ll learn the correct set-up for your vehicle before heading into the dunes.
Uphill and downhill driving:
How to use momentum properly, read dune ridges and glide safely down even the steepest slopes of every dune.
Self-Rescue & Recovery:
Don’t worry about getting stuck! We will show and teach you how to properly use a shovel, sand plates and tow ropes.
Navigation, Planning & Safety:
Identifying and assesing hazards in the desert, reading dunes, tracks and maintaining safe driving practices in challenging conditions.

The Rub’ al-Khali Desert in north-western Oman
The Rub’ al-Khali, also known as the ‘Empty Quarter’, is the world’s largest contiguous sand desert and stretches across Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. In the Omani section, the landscape is characterised by immense dunes – some of which are several hundred metres high – endless sand fields and an almost untouched desert landscape. The region is one of the driest places on Earth and offers a unique blend of silence, vastness and spectacular dune formations.
It is precisely these characteristics that make the Rub’ al-Khali an ideal location for professional desert driving training. The varied dunes allow participants to learn a wide range of driving techniques – from safely navigating steep ascents and descents, to correctly reading the dunes, right through to maintaining vehicle control on soft sand. The vast size of the area enables practical training under real desert conditions, far away from traffic and tarmac roads.
A particular advantage is the Empty Quarter Eco Lodge, which is situated in the heart of the desert and can only be reached by four-wheel-drive vehicles. The lodge is situated directly within the dunes of the Rub’ al-Khali, making it the perfect base for driving courses, expeditions and desert tours. Thanks to its unique location, participants can reach the training areas in no time whilst enjoying the comfort of modern accommodation in the heart of one of the world’s most impressive desert landscapes.
